There are multiple sides to this topic, and I will try and be as fair as I can to all sides. I think this actually breaks into a few different topics, as well, so bare with me if you can.
- Does God hate homosexuals?
No. God created all people, man and woman, in His image (Genesis 1:26), so, to hate any person is for God to hate His own image. What I can say, is that God hates sin, and, according to Leviticus 20:13, it is wrong for a man to sleep with a man in a sexual way. People could argue that this is only regards to men, and does not apply to women. *I will have to double check this, but I’m sure the Hebrew implies lesbian sexuality here, as well (I don’t have my Hebrew resources with me right now). There are two ways to use this passage, being that we are to kill homosexuals, or that homosexuality causes death. In the bible, death is a funny word, because it can mean either physical death or a spiritual death. Spiritual death is caused by sin, and this is the way I am going to approach this verse. Although God hates sin, he desires repentance and relationship.
- Should a homosexual person go to church or call themselves a Christian?
This is one of those things Christians disappoint me with all the time. People want to make sins that are more visible “worse” than sins that can be hidden or kept private. There is no where in scripture that says for people to ban anyone out of a church. The only reference to cutting someone off from a Christian community is when they are living in sin and do not desire to change how they live. There is a section of scripture (Matthew 18:15-17) that deals with people who are active in a Christian community (for instance, a church, or a Christian body):
If your brother sins against you, go and rebuke him in private. If he listens to you, you have won your brother. But if he won’t listen, take one or two more with you, so that by the testimony of two or three witnesses every fact may be established. If he pays no attention to them, tell the church. But if he doesn’t pay attention even to the church, let him be like an unbeliever and a tax collector to you.“
In conjunction with above verses, we see that all types of sexual immorality grieves the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:18-20):
Flee from sexual immorality! “Every sin a person can commit is outside the body,” but the person who is sexually immoral sins against his own body. Do you not know that your body is a sanctuary of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body.
When you are a Christian, you are declaring that your body and spirit belong to God for His purposes, and when you go and do what God has called sinful, you are breaking fellowship with Him. Repent, turn away, and restore fellowship with God.
So, if you are attending a church and declaring yourself a Christian, but are living this sort of lifestyle, and are not desiring to change it, you will eventually be cut off from the church, if the church is true to scripture. But, don’t get me wrong, if there was a thief or a liar in the church, I wouldn’t approach their lifestyle an differently.
- I heard some churches allow for homosexual clergy or staff
As you have read, homosexuality is a sin, and when it is broadcast as okay, and in fact, a good example to people, this will cause other Christians to view the church as a social club as opposed to a church. If you are at a church in this situation, in love (not anger), present scripture and ask questions. If the church cannot stand on scripture or on Jesus Christ, and you are desiring a deeper Christian walk, I’d advise looking for another church.
- Are there places on the internet I can go to get more information?
The best resource I have found is a ministry called “Exodus” ( which can be found here: http://www.exodus-international.org/ ), that may be able to provide you with more information.
